In February  1990 we flew to Cozumel for 2 weeks of scuba diving, staying at the Plaza Las Glorias. Besides the diving, we rented a car & toured the island. We also took the ferry to Playa del Carmen (then a dusty little town - no "Mayan Riviera" in sight!). In Playa we rented a decrepit old Beetle from the only car rental place in town. Then we drove down to Tulum, looked at the ruins & headed towards Coba. However, I went off the road & damaged the car. After a very helpful local trucker helped get the VW running again, we returned to Playa where we were charged $100 to repair the car. We then rented another (rag instead of a gas cap) & drove up to Cancun, then over to Chichen Itza. On the way back, the accelerator cable snapped - a couple of young Mexicans came along & repaired it with a hanger & a pair of pliers!
